Painters form the Eighties (19th century)

The Painters from the Eighties were most  famous between 1880 and 1895 and formed a link between the Hague School and the Symbolism which set in around the turn of the century. They painted in a liberated, more expressive style than their colleagues of the Hague School did and with their choice of subjects they had shown theirselves up to date and internationally orientated. Amsterdam School painters as G.H. Breitner, Isaac Israels and Willem de Zwart often used the same painting style and are therefore also referred to as Painters from the Eighties. Our collection of paintings and watercolours of Painters from the Eighties includes works of art by among others G.W. Dijsselhof, the David and Pieter Oyens brothers, W.B. Tholen and Jan Voerman sr.
