Laren School

Between 1870 and the end of the last century a group of painters around Anton Mauve arose in Laren and was called the Laren School. They were attracted by the unspoiled nature and life on the country side of Laren and Blaricum and painted the versatility of the landscape which is called ‘Het Gooi’. In a penetrating way the Laren School-painter Neuhuys recorded the Dutch farm families mostly in their farmhouse-interiors. Painters like J.S.H. Kever and Bernard de Hoog followed his example. The painters Frans Langeveld, Johan Scherrewitz, David Schulman and Cornelis Vreedenburgh painted landscapes and town views. Even though their representations were often romanticized, their loose brushstroke clearly shows the modernity of their works. The colours of the Laren School paintings are often fresher than those of their predecessors and are still very much in demand.
