Romantic School

Though the Dutch Romantic School painters always have been more modest in their conception and painting style than their German and French colleagues, there have been great Romantic School painters in Holland. Wijnand Nuijen has been considered as the ultimate romantic painter of the Netherlands. Likewise the fragile woodlandscapes by  B.C. Koekkoek and the summer and winterlandscapes by Andreas Schelfhout are still very popular. B.J. van Hove, Kasper Karsen, Cornelis Springer and Samuel Verveer were specialists of depicting town views. Within the later generation of Romantic School painters the Koekkoek and Spohler families played a significant role in depicting summerlandscapes, town views and scating scenes.
